چکیده

Crop responses to environmental stress are multidimensional. First, there is a biological dimension whereby responses to stressors depend on the nature, timing, intensity and duration of stress, and previous growing conditions. Crops have species-specific time windows when critical yield components are particularly susceptible to stresses (Andrade et al. 2005; Dunn 2005; Sadras 2007). Yield losses associated with extreme temperatures often relate to injury of reproductive structures including pollen grains, egg cells and ovules (Jain et al. 2007; Yang et al. 2007). Acclimatisation processes have been identified for extreme temperatures (Hubackova 1996; Wang and Li 2006) and other stresses (Amzallag 1996; Moulia et al. 2006; Wikbergi and Ogreni 2007; de Langre 2008). Second, location, topography and time of the year converge to determine a site and time-specific pattern of climatic conditions with potentially stressful effects on crops. For instance, the likelihood of a certain water deficit is directly linked to the patterns of rainfall and evaporative demand (Rodriguez and Sadras 2007; Sadras and Rodriguez 2007), whereas frost and heat risk are related to the tails of the frequency distributions of temperatures (Snyder and MeloAbreu 2005). The impact of heatwaves on mortality and emergency hospital admissions from non-external causes in Brisbane, Australia.

OBJECTIVES Heatwaves can have significant health consequences resulting in increased mortality and morbidity. However, their impact on people living in tropical/subtropical regions remains largely unknown. This study assessed the impact of heatwaves on mortality and emergency hospital admissions (EHAs) from non-external causes (NEC) in Brisbane, a subtropical city in Australia. METHODS We acq...

Natural hazards in Australia: heatwaves

As part of a special issue on natural hazards, this paper reviews the current state of scientific knowledge of Australian heatwaves. Over recent years, progress has been made in understanding both the causes of and changes to heatwaves. Relationships between atmospheric heatwaves and large-scale and synoptic variability have been identified, with increasing trends in heatwave intensity, frequen...

Increased risk of emergency hospital admissions for children with renal diseases during heatwaves in Brisbane, Australia.

BACKGROUND Heatwaves have a significant impact on population health including both morbidity and mortality. In this study we examined the association between heatwaves and emergency hospital admissions (EHAs) for renal diseases in children (aged 0-14 years) in Brisbane, Australia. METHODS Daily data on EHAs for renal diseases in children and exposure to temperature and air pollution were obta...

Climate change and human health: recognising the really inconvenient truth.

he United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copen-hagen (7–18 December) will soon be behind us. Climate change, however, continues to progress more rapidly and disruptively than climate scientists foreshadowed only 5 years ago. Recent peer-reviewed reports of climate change processes and impacts show, among other effects, an increased rate of greenhouse gas accumulation in the lower atmosphe...

Impact of two recent extreme heat episodes on morbidity and mortality in Adelaide, South Australia: a case-series analysis

BACKGROUND Extreme heatwaves occurred in Adelaide, South Australia, in the summers of 2008 and 2009. Both heatwaves were unique in terms of their duration (15 days and 13 days respectively), and the 2009 heatwave was also remarkable in its intensity with a maximum temperature reaching 45.7 °C. It is of interest to compare the health impacts of these two unprecedented heatwaves with those of pre...
